How they got there
How our learners pass their driving test
A little under half of practical driving tests in Britain end in a pass, and the reasons people fail barely change from year to year: not looking properly at junctions, not checking mirrors before changing direction, steering, and responding to traffic lights and road markings. Almost none of it is about working the car. It is about looking early, deciding early and then committing.
That is why we do not teach a test route. Test centres across Manchester and Cheshire East use many, and a learner who has memorised one freezes the moment the examiner sends them down a road they have never seen. We teach on the roads you will actually use afterwards, near your home, work or college, until an unfamiliar junction stops feeling like an event.
The other half is honesty about timing. Sitting a test too early costs the fee, a long wait for another slot, and a knock to your confidence that takes longer to repair than the driving does. If your instructor thinks you are not ready yet, they will tell you.

Driving lesson and test questions
There is no honest single number. The DVSA says learners who pass have had around 45 hours of lessons plus about 22 hours of private practice, but that is an average across the whole country. How often you drive, whether you can practise between lessons, and how comfortable you already are in traffic all move it. Your instructor will tell you where you are rather than sell you a fixed package.
No, and be wary of any driving school that does. Nobody can guarantee what a DVSA examiner decides on the day. What we can do is make sure you are genuinely ready before you sit it, prepare you on varied real roads rather than one memorised route, and tell you plainly if a test date is too early.

It removes one job. With no clutch or gears you have more attention for observation, road position, speed and junctions, which is where most tests are lost. The test itself is the same standard. An automatic pass gives you a licence for automatic cars only.

You can drive on your own as soon as you pass, and the examiner can send your licence off for you on the day. The usual gap is motorways, which most learners never drive before their test. We run post-test lessons on motorways and faster roads if you would rather not do your first one alone.
